What is a Tabletop RPG?
New to tabletop RPGs? Have you ever watched a movie or played a game where you thought "What are you doing?! Don't split up! Shoot the monster! Make sure it's dead!" You are already role playing.
Putting yourself in a character's shoes and thinking "What would I do in that situation?" That's how RPGs work.
How It Works
- Each player controls their own character and describes their actions
- The GM controls the world and describes how it reacts
- You determine your character's capabilities and limitations, and make decisions for them
Dice and Rules
There are rules for who goes first, and how to determine whether you succeed or not. These frequently are based on dice rolls and your character level, which broadly determines how capable you are. You may need to roll a high number if the task is difficult. Simple tasks do not need a roll.
Your capabilities, equipment, and description are recorded on your character sheet.
The Adventurer's Spirit
Adventurer. You seek, explore, conquer, learn. The unknown yields to you, the farthest shore beckons. Each expedition a challenge. To climb the highest mountain not for glory, but because it's difficult and to test your will against that of the world.
Poor choices or bad luck mean that Death is part of an adventurous life. Embrace it and taste heroism to sacrifice your character to save another.
