Spellcasting
Mages cast spells by making success rolls. The risk of spells going awry increases when:
- Wearing armour (higher Awry chance)
- Using shields (adds to Awry chance)
- Casting outside of a matrix
Awry Effects
When a spell goes awry (rolling at or below your Awry number on a natural d20), unpredictable and often dangerous effects can occur.
Spell Matrices
Spell matrices provide safer spellcasting within established patterns, reducing the chance of awry effects.
Schools of Magic
Different traditions and schools of magic exist, each with their own focus:
- Arcana - scholarly magical study
- Occult - darker mystical practices
- Divine - power granted by higher beings
- Hedge Magic - practical folk magic
