Tal Erinth is known as the Shardspire city of strange aspect, one of the great city states of the Severed Kingdom.
The Creed of Tal Erinth
Based on Enchiridion (Epictetus 135AC) — The Tenets of the gods by the RegentOn Control
You have control over your opinions, pursuits, desires, aversions. These lead to actions.
You are not in control over your future health, property, reputation or command.
If confronted with something that is not in your control, be prepared to say it means nothing to you, lest it cause you further harm and distance from happiness.
Remove aversion from all things that are not in your control, and transfer it to the things that are contrary to your control. Use only the appropriate actions of pursuit and avoidance, with reservation and gentleness.
On Possessions
With regards to things that give you delight, remind yourself that these begin from the most insignificant things. Do not be disturbed when something is lost or destroyed, as all things are created anew.
You never lose anything. It merely returns to its original state. For your life itself is merely a lease, as is everything you possess. Everything returns. Take care of each as best you can.
On Action
When about to take action, remind yourself what nature the action is. Let other things not distract you from your goal.
On Death
The notion of things is what disturbs us. Death in the end is not terrible, but the contemplation of it can be aggrieving. Thus it is with the principles and notions that we form when contemplating things beyond our control. Let go of these concerns. No blame or hindrance exists, but in our own minds.
On Excellence
Take pride in your own pursuit of excellence, but do not revel in excellence that is not your own.
As you improve, second guess yourself until you find mastery. Once you can trust yourself in your ability, others may also.
On Duty
Stay mindful of the world. Should you have a wife and child, this is good, but you may need to abandon them and lay down your life to fight for their future wellbeing. Tyranny, apathy, ignorance and abuse must be opposed.
On Adversity
Expect nothing. Adapt to everything.
A hindrance to the body does not hinder your ability to choose, unless that is your choice. Lameness is a hindrance to the leg, but not your ability to choose. Be mindful of this in regards to everything that happens, and you will see such obstacles as hindrances to something else, but not yourself.
With every accident, ask yourself what abilities you have for making a proper use of it. For pain, there is fortitude. For lust there is restraint, for fools there is patience. Once habituated each thing will be already managed.
On Tranquility
Do not allow others to perturb you, for your tranquillity is worth more than they offer.
Seize opportunity when presented, but take care not to overreach. Instead foster the creation of new advantage.
No one lives forever. Exercise care when it comes to control of lives.
